A memorable journey to London

During the first week of September, between the 4th and the 9th, the 11th grade students of Escola Básica e Secundária Ferreira de Castro had the amazing opportunity to visit some of London's most iconic attractions and places. They were accompanied by their teachers Ângela Costa, Isabel Moutinho, Júlia Lopes, and Marta Pinho.

On their first day, after leaving their luggage at the hotel, they learned how to take the underground and headed to the Madame Tussauds Museum. There, they were excited to see wax replicas of various people ranging from actors to musicians, the British Royal Family, Princess Diana and iconic movie characters and franchises. In the evening, they experienced an amazing musical theatre production of Mamma Mia! by the theatre company Delfont Mackintosh Theatres.

During the morning of the second day, they visited the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. Some students even got to visit the Victoria and Albert Museum, had that been their preference. All three museums offered an enriching experience, allowing the students to expand their scientific vocabulary in a fun, entertaining way. During the afternoon they walked around London, visiting parks, Buckingham Palace and the Big Ben. In the evening, they explored Piccadilly Circus and Chinatown freely, enhancing their conversational English.

On the third day, and arguably the most tiring day, they walked around Camden Town during the morning, learning more about the local culture and, in the afternoon, they had the opportunity to walk the Millennium Bridge and see St.Paul's Cathedral and the Shakespeare's Globe as well as the Tate Modern Museum. After dinner, they observed the London Eye and the Big Ben at night with their lights lit up, taking in the beautiful view.

During the fourth day, in the morning, they saw the Tower Bridge before travelling to Greenwich and, during the afternoon they saw a breathtaking view of London while inside the London Eye. After what felt like a couple of minutes in the London Eye they visited the London Dungeon, an immersive story-driven horror experience that left some excited and some scared to continue the journey inside. After leaving, they visited the famous Leake Street Arches, observing various graffiti.

During what should have been their last day, the students visited the British Museum and the Covent Garden Market. Some students also visited the National Art Gallery, expanding their knowledge on art from the 13th to the 20th century. After lunch, they headed towards the airport to catch their flight and, upon arriving at the check-in, found out that their flight had been cancelled. After tiring hours of waiting they discovered that they would have to spend the night at the Gatwick Airport until their flight in the afternoon of the following day. The night was unforgiving as the students and teachers slept on the cold floor of the airport, barely having any news about their situation.

Overall, even though they had that problem at the airport and walked a lot during the day, this was an enriching and fun experience, where the students had the opportunity to learn more about a different culture and country as well as practice their English skills and make new friends through an experience that a textbook could never provide. It was a remarkable experience that they will always remember and cherish.

 Graças ao projeto Eramus + , o Agrupamento de Escolas Ferreira de Castro permitiu a quinze alunos do 12.º ano, de Cursos Científico- Humanísticos, acompanhados por dois professores, uma experiência de aprendizagem em terras croatas.

Se tal não fosse suficientemente entusiasmante, acrescente-se a experiência de job shadowing (acompanhamento no local de trabalho) de uma docente e de uma técnica superior do Agrupamento também em Metkovic, na Croácia.

Após terem recebido os seus colegas croatas em Oliveira de Azeméis, os alunos da Ferreira de Castro viajaram até à cidade de Metkovic, na Croácia, para uma mobilidade no âmbito do Projeto Erasmus+ Learning programme for group activities KA121-SCH-000144225, tendo como temas de trabalho a Inclusão, as Tecnologias em meio escolar e a Saúde Mental.

O Agrupamento de Escolas Ferreira de Castro, promotor de uma visão de futuro, de internacionalização e preocupado com o bem estar e crescimento social e académico dos seus alunos, proporcionou a um grupo de 15 alunos do 12.º ano dos Cursos Científico Humanísticos e aos professores Maria Fernanda Gomes e Mário Matos a participação nesta mobilidade.
Foram seis dias de grandes momentos de partilha em contexto de trabalho na escola anfitriã, de visitas a cidades como Dubrovnik, Mostar e Split e muito convívio entre croatas e portugueses.
Este programa teve como objetivo a promoção e o desenvolvimento pessoal dos alunos, o reforço da identidade europeia, a promoção da cooperação, inclusão, criatividade e inovação, assim como o desenvolvimento de competências digitais, o conhecimento dos hábitos culturais croatas e a partilha de saberes firmados pela participação em atividades letivas, workshops e palestras na escola, nomeadamente uma sessão com duas psicólogas croatas sobre Saúde Mental e a apresentação da aplicação TimeToast, ferramenta interessante que os alunos podem utilizar em contexto escolar.

No âmbito dos tópicos do projeto, inclusão e saúde mental, visitámos em Mostar, a Instituição “Emanuel” que oferece às pessoas com deficiência a oportunidade de melhorar as suas capacidades, adquirir novas competências e fazer a respetiva integração social.

Na cidade de Split visitámos o Centro de Prestação de Serviços à Comunidade Split que trabalha com crianças e jovens com problemas de comportamento ou em risco de os desenvolver. Foi também realizada uma entrevista a uma professora croata de Tecnologias Digitais, no sentido de comparar as políticas educativas no que às novas tecnologias diz respeito entre os dois países.
Os nossos alunos foram muito bem recebidos pelas famílias que os acolheram e demonstraram sempre com um grande sentido de responsabilidade, cientes das dificuldades e diferenças culturais.
Acreditamos que são experiências como estas, onde alunos e professores saem das suas zonas de conforto, que fazem com que todos se transformem em cidadãos mais capazes e aptos num mundo cada vez mais globalizado e multicultural.

Estes intercâmbios são oportunidades de crescimento para todos os intervenientes quer a nível pessoal, quer a nível cultural, deixando marcas indeléveis para o resto das suas vidas.


No mesmo âmbito, uma Professora de Inglês e uma Técnica especializada na área da Educação Social, também se deslocaram à cidade de Metkovic, mas para uma semana de job shadowing, acompanhando as aulas de inglês e as Psicólogas da escola respetivamente, com o objetivo de conhecer e estudar o sistema de educação croata, implementar novas metodologias de ensino e para conhecer novas estratégias de inclusão e diversidade.
Para ambas foi uma semana plena em desenvolvimento pessoal, cultural e profissional, pois tiveram a oportunidade e o privilégio de observar in loco o funcionamento do sistema educacional croata e perceber as diferenças e semelhanças relativamente ao nosso, assistindo a aulas de diferentes níveis e disciplinas, interagindo com os alunos, bem como partilhando conhecimentos e práticas pedagógicas com os colegas da referida instituição.


Os alunos, encarregados de educação e professores agradecem ao Agrupamento de Escolas Ferreira de Castro, na pessoa da Sra Diretora Ilda Ferreira, a possibilidade que nos proporcionou em participar nesta experiência tão enriquecedora.
